According to E!, Joan Rivers is in stable condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York after she stopped breathing on her own during a surgical procedure. TMZ first reported that Rivers was rushed to the hospital from the clinic during an operation on her vocal chords.

There are conflicting stories regarding exactly what happened during the surgery, which NBC reports was being performed at Yorkville Endoscopy in Manhattan. TMZ has reported that Rivers' heart stopped at some point during the procedure, though that detail appears to have not yet been confirmed by other sources. E!—which airs Rivers' show Fashion Police—notes only that she ceased breathing during the operation.

More, presumably, is to come, including what figures to be a slew of caustic jokes from Rivers at her own expense.
