Lily Tomlin Accuses Beyoncé of “Selling a Lot of Sex to Teeny-Boppers”
Oh boy. In a recent interview with Pride Source, actress and feminist Lily Tomlin was asked what she thought of modern examples of feminism, specifically think-piece darlings Beyoncé and Girls. Can you believe that she responded with anything other than "both perfect, next question"?
After Pride Source points out that many consider Beyoncé a feminist, and that she's even referred to herself (probably too specifically) as a "modern-day feminist," Tomlin responds:
Yeah, well, I think that's great, and what can I say? She is a pretty popular woman and she's married to a very powerful man, but she's still selling sex. She's selling a lot of sex to teeny-boppers. Who are her fans? Everybody?
After Pride Source points out that, uh, yeah, everybody (citing Saturday Night Live's "The Beygency" as proof), Tomlin backtracks a bit:
Oh, shit. I like her! I don't dislike her! But I don't pay any attention to that because - I mean, she's fantastically beautiful and dances, but, you know, it's very suggestive. If I was a 10-year-old, I would try to emulate her like most 10-year-olds do.
She later goes on to admit that she isn't "terribly conversant with Beyonce," nor has she seen much of Girls, so she shouldn't really comment on either. Too late, Tomlin! You've made your think-piece bed and now the rest of us have to lie in it, discussing the freedom for a woman to be sexually expressive versus the responsibility one has to protect young girls from feeling as though they need to be sexually expressive, alone. I'm sure you're not paying attention. What is it like in your world? (Is it beautiful?)
