OK, as stupid/weird/pointless as this may seem, I was JUST discussing him (and the rest of Gilligan's Island) at a bar last night. A woman wondered why the question was always "Mary Ann or Ginger", but not "The Skipper or Gilligan or The Professor or Mr. Howell"? It all spun out of control after that, but, anyway...
Poor unfuckable Mrs. Howell.
Definitely the Professor over Mr. Howell (shudder). The Gilligan vs. Skipper one's a toughie. Am I allowed to be blackout-drunk?
Seriously? What type of bar do you have these type of conversations? The Tonga and Hurricane Room at the San Fran Fairmont?
The Professor all day. Both for his looks, and for that nerdy bookishness I find irresistible.
I'm not exactly up on my Gilligan's Island behind the scenes drama. Is "the rest" an allusion to some kind of Johnson/Wells hanky panky?
In the early versions of the opening song, The Professor wasn't explicitly included. Rather, he and Mary Anne were referred to as 'the rest'.
Right, although I don't remember which version was earlier and which was later: "The movie star, and the rest" or "The movie star, the Professor and Mary Ann"
ETA: Since Rhacodacylus (Shit that was hard to type!) said "earlier versions" I guess that answers my question.
The original GI theme song didn't identify Maryann or the Professor by name. They were referred to as "the rest."
In the theme song, they used to sing "..the professor and Mary Ann..." But for some reason, one season they shortened to "the movie star/and all the rest." No explanation, they just did. Maybe they were in a contract dispute or considered killing one of the off for some reason and wanted to cover their bases.
Awww...seemed like a a genuinely decent guy. Godspeed.
Awww, sad to hear (although 89 is a decent run). He was one of my first crushes. Probably why I continue to have a thing for brainy guys :)
Me too! I had it bad for him when I was six or so.
Since he was 89, we can assume the cause of death was not "roomus igloomus".
That's more then decent. That's a long time.
Yeah, me too! I used to get SO upset when Ginger tried to seduce him ... because I knew that the Professor was saving himself for shore leave with me.
