Last August, three months into John Oliver's turn as substitute host of The Daily Show, the British comedian was being being tabbed by Vulture as Jon Stewart's obvious successor. But just three months after that, Oliver was gone to HBO, where he has now found something even better: his own show that is a much funnier version of the one he left.

Mondays suck. But you can improve this one just a little by watching the first episode of John Oliver's new show, Last Week Tonight, which HBO has generously made available to mere peasants by putting it on YouTube.

HBO announced on Wednesday that John Oliver's highly anticipated new show, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, will debut Sunday, April 27. According to reports, the half-hour show will be a "satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events."

After John Oliver spent eight weeks this summer filling in for The Daily Show host Jon Stewart who was off filming his directorial debut Rosewater (and not living out a live action Lord of the Rings roleplay, as Oliver would have had you believe), many were convinced that those 32 episodes were a mark that he'd soon be taking over Stewart's seat. HBO moved quickly and announced today that Oliver would be hosting a weekly comedy talk show for their network, set to premiere next year.
