Disney's Mean Queen Maleficent Is Just Misunderstood in New Trailer
The trailer for Disney's new Maleficent has been released and it'll surely scare the ever-loving shit out of small girls accustomed to nice princess films. It'll also confuse adults who remember Maleficent as the purely evil woman who, when not invited to a party, decided to kill the only daughter of a fertility-challenged couple.
According to the trailer, Disney's "greatest villain comes to life" in the studio's May 30 release. The re-imagination of Sleeping Beauty stars Angelina Jolie as evil queen Maleficent, complete with pointy cheekbones, ears, and piercing eyes.
"Maleficent" explores the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty" and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
So now we're supposed to feel sorry for Maleficent, as her once pure heart was turned to stone by a previous betrayal? And because of that betrayal, I guess, she was driven to do bad things like curse baby girls, kidnap grown men, and ruin Jennifer Aniston's life? While I admit it's time to forgive Maleficent Jolie for making bad life choices long ago, will families come out in droves to see the film in 3D? Especially after seeing the pretty cheesy trailer?
Calling it now: first disappointing Disney release of the summer (to be quickly followed by Planes: Fire and Rescue).
