Iggy Pulls Out of Pittsburgh Pride, Slowly Disappears Before Our Eyes
If Iggy Azalea raps, but there’s no one around to hear her, does the straight crack rock still roar to your pop-pop? It appears this ancient and well-known proverb will soon be put to the test, because after scrapping her entire Great Escape tour, Iggy has canceled yet another show: she will no longer be appearing at Pittsburgh Pride this weekend.
You can’t really chalk this one up to her waning popularity, though, because she wasn’t all that popular among LGBT folks and allies to begin with. In her statement, she alludes to all the times she’s tweeted about “homos” and “dyke bitches”:
This has been a difficult decision as I truly support the event and LGBTIQA communities, however I feel my participation at this point would only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event.
I am a firm believer in equality. Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so carelessly said to be interpreted as reflective of my character.
I meant no harm and deeply regret ever uttering those words. As an adult I would never use them because I understand they play a detrimental role in the fight for issues that I do truly believe in.
Pittsburgh’s first openly gay city council president, Bruce Kraus, was among those calling for a boycott of Azalea’s appearance, the Post-Gazette reported. The local chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and a unitarian church also dropped out of Pride in protest.
Iggy’s label says she’s going to release an album and finally tour in 2016, but will anyone even care by then? As Perez Hilton yell-typed early this morning, “will she ever sing live again?!”
Or will a mysterious spectral female figure haunt the halls of Mullumbimby High School, its ghostly, quavering voice echoing off the lockers for all eternity: “When the relay starts, I’m a runaway slave ... master. Whoooooo. Oooo. Boo! Remember meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...”
One of those, probably.
