Is The Bachelor Host Chris Harrison a Sociopath?
Unflappable Invisalign® advert Chris Harrison has been hosting The Bachelor franchise for the past 13 years, during which time it appears he's lost the ability to engage in functional human relationships. He divorced his college sweetheart, Gwen, in 2012, and now says that making her the next Bachelorette would be "epic television."
In an interview with GQ out today, Harrison ponders life and love, in addition to the relative merits of guiding his ex-wife through rose ceremonies and Fantasy Suite dates for the sake of TV. When asked about the possibility of hosting The Bachelorette: My Ex-Wife Who Shared a Life With Me for 20 Years, Harrison replied excitedly:
Now, there's an idea. There's a part of me, the producer side, that knows it would be epic television, good or bad. It could be like the Hindenburg—the greatest disaster ever—but even then that would be great TV.
The Hindenburg disaster left 36 people dead in a fiery explosion—but yes, people did watch.
It seems Harrison believes that The Bachelor is a net positive for the world, teaching today's males how to interact with the ladies. "I do think we have helped evolve the modern man, to teach him how a woman wants to be treated," he explains.
It has also helped evolve his own view of love, which is this:
Love is as much of a competition as anything. If you don't think so, you're either losing the game or you're not playing.
That said, Harrison tells GQ he is happy to avoid human interaction altogether. "I'm incredibly, stunningly, happy" after the divorce, he says. "What gave me angst was relationships."
Prayers to Harrison as Season 19 of The Bachelor premieres tonight on ABC.
