Showrunner Lee Daniels was disappointed Empire didn’t get many Emmy nominations Thursday, but he handled it with the grace and politesse that have become hallmarks of the conciliatory conversational style of Empire’s own Cookie “Monster” Lyon: He made a “fuck you” video and posted it on Instagram.
At tonight's Emmys, Billy Crystal spoke succinctly and movingly about his comedy peer and "the greatest friend you could ever imagine," Robin Williams. "It's very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives," he said during his three-minute tribute, which preceded a short montage of Williams' television work.
Weird Al Yankovic followed his chart-topping new album by parodying the theme songs from some of this year's nominated shows. Unfortunately for Weird Al, he got the fake lyrics totally wrong. After a skit during which Julia Louis-Dreyfus pretended not to remember his guest appearance on Seinfeld, Bryan Cranston stopped the Veep star on her way to collect her trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and gave her an eleven-second long kiss. "Um, yeah he was on Seinfeld," she said after finally making her way to the podium.
The highlight of tonight's Emmys so far (faint praise, I know) was Billy Eichner's Billy on the Street skit with Seth Meyers—an extended riff on how no one in New York gives a shit about the Emmys, including one woman who amazingly identified the award as a "Gobla."
During a welcomed reprieve from host Seth Meyers' snoozy jokes, Jimmy Kimmel raised the question we've all been pondering leading up to the Emmys: Man, I can't believe bona fide Movie Star (and Academy Award Winner) Matthew McConaughey is going to be at an awards show...for television.
During tonight's red carpet show on E!, Sarah Silverman showed host Giuliana Rancic the contents of her purse. One surprise? Her handheld vaporizer. "This is, uh, my pot," Silverman told a shocked Rancic.

HBO and Netflix have strong showings in this year's Emmy nominations, which offer largely predictable (though, predictable because many are very good!) options.
The Emmys, as expected, were boring as fuck. There were some great moments (below) which punctuated an otherwise three hour circle jerk of Hollywood's third-finest because film is greater than Broadway which is greater than television. Suck on that, smallest screen stars.
Another year, another Emmys, another reason that I'll be missing the penultimate Breaking Bad episode (that and the fact that I haven't seen any of Breaking Bad prior to this).
