Last night, E! released a teaser for an upcoming Keeping Up With the Kardashians episode where 17-year-old Kylie Jenner reveals she’s had lip injections. Anyone who’s seen a photo of Kylie in the last year could have told you that, but the Kardashians have gone to great lengths to keep it just another sweet family secret.

—Until now, of course, when Kylie’s lip injections can make for a good storyline on the show. In a voiceover, Kylie explains, “I have temporary lip fillers. It’s just an insecurity of mine and it’s what I wanted to do.”

This revelation is juxtaposed with footage of Kylie awkwardly avoiding a question about her lips in an interview with a grown man who has traveled all the way from New Zealand to interview a teenage girl about her lips. (“Everyone thinks I use like one certain [lip] color...so I use like six different colors...all the time...so...yeah.”)

“I’m just not ready to talk to reporters about my lips yet, because everyone always picks us apart,” Kylie says later of her answer. “I want to admit to the lips, but people are so quick to judge me on everything, so I might’ve tip-toed around the truth, but I didn’t lie.”

Hmm. Since last year, Kylie and her family haven’t so much “tip-toed” around the truth about her lips, as they have run sprints away from it.

Here, we have attempted to assemble a complete collection of all the Kardashians’ tip-toes around the truth—taking numerous shortcuts through a pumpkin patch of lies—regarding Kylie’s lips since last April.

“These plastic surgery rumors hurt my feelings”

After tabloids began speculating that Kylie had had lip injections in April 2014, she addressed the rumors on Twitter. While stopping short of an outright denial, she did pout that the rumors were “kinda insulting.”

Kylie also pointed out her age, implying 16 is too young for elective cosmetic procedures like the one she later admitted to having undergone in secret.

“I’m bored”

In October, Kylie moved on from being hurt by the rumors to being bored.

Instead of directly denying anything to do with “this lip thing,” she asked the public to talk about “important shit” instead.

Failing that, new shit would suffice.

“She only wears a lip liner”

Just days later, the Kardashians brought in the big guns—Kim herself—to dispel the rumors. Kim revealed in a YouTube interview:

I go into [Kylie’s] room, and I’m like, “What liner do you wear?” because she only wears a lip liner, and then she fills it in. She doesn’t wear lipstick or a gloss.

Perhaps realizing this was not so convincing, Kim added, “She’s so good. She’s so good at makeup. Every event, she only does it herself.”

She’s so good she’s so good she’s soooooo good.

“In pictures I pout them out a lot”

In November, Kylie spoke to a reporter—from E!, home to Keeping Up With the Kardashians—about her lips for the first time. “In pictures I pout [my lips] out a lot, so I don’t know. I love—I think big lips are awesome. So I don’t know, I feel like everyone has been talking about it for months, so I’m kind of sick of it.”

She added, “I love lip liner and over lining my lips. But I don’t even care anymore. I’m like whatever, just say whatever you want.”

I’m like whatever.

“My face is going to get different”

Kylie told Cosmopolitan in February that her new look is a result of aging. “You guys have watched me grow up since I was 9. My face is going to get different. Now, I know how to do my makeup, contour and everything.”

Kylie then added that she did not—at that exact instant, on that day, in her life—desire to have plastic surgery, without explicitly denying that she had ever had it: “I’m not against surgery. I’d never say no, but I don’t desire it right now.”

“I’ve never been under the knife”

In April, Kylie directly denied having plastic surgery to Grazia magazine. “I haven’t had plastic surgery. I’ve never been under the knife. People flashback to pictures of me when I was 12 and say ‘Kylie’s so different,’ but how can I look the same from 12 -18?”

It is certainly true that Kylie looks so different.

With all the side-stepping over the last year, it’s almost incredible that Kylie has now come out and admitted that she’s had lip injections. But this is how the Kardashian machine works: the family avoids talking to the press about anything that isn’t directly promoting one of the Kardashian brands, and then they tackle more substantive issues on their carefully-edited reality show. We have to tune in to Keeping Up With the Kardashians to find out what Kris Jenner thinks about Bruce’s transition, too.

(For what it’s worth: Kylie could technically be telling the truth when she says she has never been under the “knife”; a plastic surgeon told People that Kylie’s lips were most likely injected with sugar gel to plump them up for six to nine months.)
