Halle Berry Divorcing French Husband, As the Tabloids Foretold
Despite the fact that the two had an “affectionate” coffee date in the presence of paparazzi two months ago, Halle Berry and her French husband of two years Olivier Martinez are officially divorcing. The tabloids have long predicted that the couple would split, so congratulations to them.
TMZ reports Berry was the one to file, citing irreconcilable differences. In a joint statement to People, Berry and Martinez—who share one two-year-old son, Maceo—said:
It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce. We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children’s privacy as we go through this difficult period.
While Berry once called Martinez “The One,” recent behavior suggests her feelings about him changed. For one thing, she lost her engagement ring in Mexico and never bothered to replace it. For another, she apparently forgot her wedding anniversary (and maybe the fact that she was married at all) during an E! News interview in July. When E! congratulated her on her upcoming two-year anniversary, she asked, “Two years of what?”
This is Berry’s second failed relationship with a French-speaking gentleman (that we know of). In 2010, she broke things off with French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. (Martinez allegedly beat Aubry up in a round of front-yard Thanksgiving Day fisticuffs in 2012.) Berry and Aubry are still battling for custody over their seven-year-old daughter Nahla.
